Design Journal: Dog Park Baseball

May 29, 2008

So this weekend my friends and I wanted to play some outdoor games which really doesn’t get done often enough so anyway we went down to this dog park near my friends place with a baseball bat a soccer ball and some tennis balls and anyway we came up with a fantastic idea for a game. You play baseball but instead of running to bases you actually had to complete the dog obstacle course. This included weaving in and out of poles then jumping up a steep incline/drop off then jumping over several different heighted bars and finally walking up and over the see-saw before sliding into home for the big W.

Anyway it was a great idea till someone got hurt needless to say it had nothing to do with the game’s design. But we had other rules too like you could never stop at any bases you just got points for how far you got and you didn’t tag the person you had to just peg the ball at their head and if it hit them they were out. We didn’t have strikes either if you missed the ball you had to chase after it and whack it because we didn’t have enough people for a catcher. I’m not sure how we could port this to a computer or board game but it was a really fun game to play on the day.
