Design Journal - Game inspirations

March 8, 2008

In the last few years since I started making simple casual games I have learnt a lot about what it is to create a fun game. Most of the time when trying to come up with a new idea for a game I reflect internally to decide what it is about games that I find fun and how I can recreate that for myself.

And I am not just talking about stealing ideas from games I have played previously. This is why you see the constant reiteration of game ideas through popular games. We have “game categories” specific types of game play that not only describe how a game is played but the basic structure of what a game should be. Now there are hundreds of game categories but I find it amazing how specific categories such as FPS games and RTS games can pop up so frequently with very little deviation from each other and still come out successful.

Working in the industry creating viral media is far less effective at showing off creativity than and rarely provides a unique and entertaining experience.

But this can be too hard on such a large scale that most games employ. And it is for this reason that I love to come up with simple games, because these style of games were what existed back in the beginning of time where the truly unique and inspired game mechanics came out. There were no limits on what you could create even though there was such a limiting gaming experience.

I guess it is just the desire of every person who wants to create something new to be there and have that idea when they really sell something that no one has ever been before. It is my life’s ambition to create this.
